Where to stay in Rome: choose your base from your route

Map your mornings
Put your first activity for each day on a map and compare the journey from each accommodation shortlist. A central address may still create an awkward route if every morning starts elsewhere. Compare door-to-door travel, not just the hotel distance from one famous landmark. Decide which morning matters most before adding more options.
Check the complete address
Check the exact street, floor, lift information, check-in arrangements and access from your arrival station or stop. A listing labelled with a popular district name may sit at its edge. If quiet evenings matter, read recent comments about room location and noise. A district label cannot guarantee conditions inside an individual building.
Include the evening journey
Think about where you will eat and how you will return. Look up your connection and operating hours close to the trip. If you plan to walk, consider group pace and whether that journey will feel comfortable after sightseeing. Save a backup address or route offline rather than finding it when everybody is tired.
Compare total value
Record the total stay cost and expected transport. A saving can be useful even with a longer journey if you accept the tradeoff. Choose two non-negotiables, such as lift access and a short first-morning journey, before browsing. Record your final base in the workbook and adjust each day around it.
