   Fushimi Inari-taisha

   10,000 torii gates. Start at 6am — by 9am it's shoulder-to-shoulder. Full mountain loop is 2 hours.

   Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)

   Ticket sold as a shrine amulet. 30 min circuit; no interior access. Bus 205 from Kyoto Station.

   Arashiyama bamboo grove + Tenryū-ji

   Bamboo photos need 7am to be empty. Tenryū-ji garden is UNESCO. Sagano Romantic Train in autumn.

   Gion district

   Hanamikoji Street at dusk for geiko/maiko sightings. Photo bans on the private lanes now enforced.

   Kiyomizu-dera

   Wooden stage over the hillside. Nearby Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka slopes for the postcard streetscape.

   Nishiki Market

   'Kyoto's Kitchen' — 5 blocks of stalls. Try tako-tamago, yuba, matcha soft-serve. Closed at 6pm.

   Philosopher's Path + Ginkaku-ji

   Canal walk lined with cherry trees (peak early April). Silver Pavilion at the far end.
