   Medieval seven streets around Santiago Cathedral. Pintxos bars packed shoulder-to-shoulder after 20:00 — try Gure Toki, Sorginzulo.

   Mercado de la Ribera

   Largest covered market in Europe, on the river. Ground floor fish + meat, upper floor pintxos bars for lunch. Closed Sunday.

   Funicular de Artxanda + viewpoint

   3 min funicular to hilltop with best Bilbao panorama. Free with Barik card, otherwise EUR 2.50 return. Restaurant Txakoli at top.

   Azkuna Zentroa (Alhóndiga)

   Philippe Starck cultural centre in a converted wine warehouse — 43 different pillars, glass-bottom rooftop pool. Free entry.

   San Mames stadium (Athletic Bilbao)

   'La Catedral' — Basque-only players rule. Museum + tour daily except match days. Even non-fans admire the LED skin at night.

   Museo de Bellas Artes

   Skip the Guggenheim queues here: El Greco, Goya, Gauguin. Free Wednesdays. 10 min walk from Guggenheim.

   Zubizuri bridge (Calatrava)

   Curved white footbridge over Nervión. Slippery when wet — locals grumble but it's the shot. Sunset light hits it well.

   Getxo + Vizcaya Bridge day trip

   Metro L1 30 min to Areeta. UNESCO-listed 1893 transporter bridge, ride the gondola across for EUR 0.45. Beach + pintxos in Algorta after.
